This small village garden comes with a cottage garden aesthetic. Existing walls surround the property and a mix of paving, along with gravel and decking boards help soften the feel.
Our clients had owned the property for 15 years, but with their children now much older their needs had changed and they wanted to use the space differently. A nice outdoor dining area was high on the list of wants, as well as lots of varied planting.
The back of the garden receives the most evening sun and so it was decided that it would be an ideal location for the dining area. Climbing plants including roses and Clematis were planted along the wall to provide height and to soften the brickwork. A mix of topiary and lush planting also surrounds the area, providing an enclosed area and the feeling of being immersed in nature.
A curved gravel path connects the front patio to the dining area, taking you on a journey through cottage-style planting including Salvias, Geums, Roses, Hydrangeas, Dahlias, Agastaches, and many more plants. Existing trees were kept to add height to the garden and to provide a habitat for birds. A mix of evergreen and structural plants were also planted nearer the house for the purpose of providing winter interest.
